Karyssa Lang was a 10th grader at Chincoteague High School when she was awarded as the 1st Place Winner of the 2018 Kathleen Walsh Richardson Citizenship Award. Karyssa was an extremely dedicated volunteer throughout her community. As the Vice President of Hoof Beats by the Beach 4H Club Karyssa worked on several community service projects such as cultivating and donating vegetables to the hungry in need on the Eastern Shore. Karyssa also assisted with the 4H club’s annual pet supply drive for the Eastern Shore SPCA. As an active volunteer through the Chincoteague Fire Department, Karyssa has assisted in organizing and operating the Chincoteague community carnival each year as well as helping out with the annual Pony Swim. Over the holiday season, Karyssa worked with her mother and local Hospice Coordinators to collect and wrap Christmas gifts that were donated to local families in need. Those gifts were organized and donated in her families’ spare time. To quote from Karyssa’s Application, she states “My mom was once a single mom that needed help to give me Christmas and now we pay it forward each year.” Karyssa truly demonstrates what it means to be a great citizen. We would like to congratulate her on her efforts and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
