In Memory of Maggie Lee Byrd

Maggie Lee Byrd, a stroke survivor and founding member of No Limits, passed away on 3/24/14. Maggie has been an integral part of No Limits since we opened in March 2001. She was a powerful advocate for the Eastern Shore brain injury community for years prior to No Limits’ opening through her involvement in Shore Memorial Hospital’s Stroke Support Group and Grandmaster Elton Trower’s exercise group for survivors of brain injury.

When No Limits Eastern Shore sought to become the first locally based provider of brain injury services and needed to rally local support, it was Maggie Byrd who hand-carried the letter to her friend, retired Delegate and Cabinet Secretary Bob Bloxom. Maggie was active in her church family and active in her community, serving as a Salvation Army bell-ringing volunteer every season for over a decade as well as participating in many of No Limits’ community efforts.

Maggie remembered so many local Shore people from her years as a bus driver for the Accomack County School District. She had a sharp and inquisitive mind and we have relied upon her to keep her eyes on everything and keep us all straight. It is from Maggie Byrd that No Limits takes our signature statement, “Our name is No Limits because there are no limits to what we can try to do.”

It has been a season of loss for No Limits Eastern Shore. Our only consolation is that the answer to the often-asked question, “Is Maggie feeling better yet?” is finally YES. Maggie is at peace. We will miss her more than words can say.
